  • How Data Science Protects Fuel Stations

The importance of Data Science and Data Engineering in Precise Fuel Management Dover Fueling Solutions® (DFS) monitors tens of thousands of underground fuel tanks and dispensers around the world each day. To offer the highest level of protection to its customers, it relies heavily on accurate data. Using both data science and data engineering to evaluate and analyze large sets of data it collects from on-site devices, DFS is able to effectively identify fuel loss from a wide range of sources, including those caused by leaks, meter drift and fraud. How DFS Collects Data from Fuel Stations All raw data from on-site equipment is first gathered by the forecourt controller (FCC), which is connected to the Cloud platform. The FCC then sends this data to the Microsoft Azure IoT Hub to preprocess, and then saves it to Azure storage services, including CosmosDB and Azure Data Lakes. Why DFS Needs to Collect Data Running a fuel retail business is a challenging job that requires thorough monitoring and tracking of all equipment and processes on the forecourt in order to be done successfully. There are a number of very serious issues that can occur on site and lead to environmental damage and potentially severe financial implications, as well as harm to brand reputation which may affect future business. The best way to detect these problems before they become a more serious issue is by analyzing trends and patterns in data over significant time periods. For that, DFS uses carefully-engineered statistical and machine-learning models, which adapt standard techniques for industry-specific purposes by incorporating a great deal of domain knowledge from internal experts. These systems will identify instances of fuel loss accurately and will also flag up measurement and data-entry issues, which may not necessarily mean a forecourt losing fuel. In such cases, expert insight into initial algorithm outputs from skilled data engineers can help to reduce the number of false alarms. This fine-tuning also helps to improve the overall performance of DFS’ wetstock monitoring models over time, meaning it can provide a better service to its customers. DFS systems are able to monitor and diagnose problems on numerous devices that have different operating characteristics and function in different conditions. It manages large-scale analytics and model deployment using Microsoft Azure services and infrastructure, most notably Apache Spark with Azure Databricks and Docker containers, for more complex modeling pipelines. Data science plays an important and often crucial role in the development of DFS’ products, services and solutions. Data-driven capabilities are continually developed and refined to ensure seamless and uninterrupted operation of all fuel station equipment, which helps fuel retailers to lower operational costs and improve profit margins, whilst offering regulatory and environmental protection to keep operators legally compliant.

  • Dover Fueling Solutions® and Shell Introduce Self-Checkout Kiosk

AUSTIN, TEXAS – February 15, 2020 –Dover Fueling Solutions® (“DFS”), a part of Dover Corporation and a leading global provider of advanced customer-focused technologies, services and solutions in the fuel and convenience retail industries, has recently partnered with Shell to co-develop and roll out Self-Checkout Kiosk across a number of Shell fueling stations in the Netherlands in order to reduce queues and improve the purchasing experience for its customers. Equipped with the DFS Self-Checkout Kiosk, visitors to Shell sites are now able to scan for their own fuel, as well as in-store products, and make their purchases in a single, harmonised transaction. After a series of successful tests, Shell plans to extend the solution to its deli by Shell stations (sites with bakery service) in the coming weeks in order to promote an all-inclusive experience, with the vision of rolling out the solution to its motorway service stations later in the year. The development of the DFS Self-Checkout Kiosk is derived from close cooperation between various teams across the Shell network and a partnership with DFS. Christel Boevé, Shell Marketing Channel and Insights Manager, has been leading the innovative project and has been delighted with the results so far. "We were able to fully trial the kiosk in just eight short weeks”, Boevé commented. “Following this, priority has been given to stations with a deli facility, but we are now testing the solution at various Shell motorway stations and expect that it will be implemented across our motorway network very soon.” Visitors to the DFS Self-Checkout Kiosk sites now have the option to take charge of their fuel and convenience purchasing experience, giving Shell staff greater flexibility in managing their roles, the ability to pay more attention to their guests and the capability to serve them in a more personal way. Giving visitors the choice between being helped at the checkout counter or scan and checkout themselves has already gone a long way in reducing queues and improving efficiencies across the Shell empire. Experienced hostess Lynn works at Shell Boulevard in Zeist, the Netherlands, and has been heavily involved in the project from the beginning. "Fewer and fewer people who visit Shell bakery service stations just want to pay for their refuelling alone,” Lynn explained. “A long queue is a frustration for many guests, especially when they don't have a lot of time. Self-scanning is a huge advantage for both the customer and the Shell network.” Kurt Dillen, VP Business Development, DFS, said, “Our new self-checkout solution, developed in an agile way with Shell, is delivering the ultimate enhanced customer experience and will help the station owner to improve throughput and reduce their operational cost.”

  • Dover Fueling Solutions® Partners with AvaLAN to Offer a Secure Wireless Ethernet Forecourt Communica

Dover Fueling Solutions® (“DFS”), a part of Dover Corporation that delivers advanced fuel dispensing equipment, electronic systems and payment, fleet systems, automatic tank gauging, and wetstock management, is pleased to announce its new partnership with Huntsville, Alabama-based wireless Ethernet company AvaLAN, to bring its secure wireless communication technology to market with DFS products for the first time. The partnership between DFS and AvaLAN commences with the North American release of DFS Wireless Connect. This plug-and-play secure wireless ethernet system eliminates the need to excavate and re-wire the forecourt or rely on aging, low-speed wiring, allowing sites to support the latest dispenser functions and features, such as EMV® payment, media, diagnostics, mobile pay, loyalty programs, and interaction with the back office, which require a fast network to manage the communication and security. With DFS Wireless Connect, transmissions utilize a proprietary protocol combined with advanced encryption technology and have possibility for segmented networking for a logical separation of secure payment card holder data all the way out to the dispenser. This will allow retailers to have a separate subnetwork for secure outdoor payment data and thereby a simpler PCI Data Security Standard (DSS) audit. “We are excited to be able to offer our AvaLAN solutions to all North American DFS fuel retailers. This secure wireless communication technology will help optimize the retailer’s business while increasing data security and simplifying the transition to EMV,” said AvaLAN CEO and President Matthew Nelson. “This secure, proven technology from AvaLAN is a great complement to the Dover Fueling Solutions® product portfolio and will help our customers upgrade their forecourt networks to support the latest and future dispenser features,” noted DFS President David Crouse. “As a company committed to enabling the evolution of consumer experience in fueling and convenience retail, we are thrilled to be taking this step forward.” For more information about AvaLAN’s secure wireless solution, click here.
